Fashion trends – weather they be clothing or hairstyles – come and go. While we’re always keeping our fingers on the pulse for our readers, we’d like to remind you that your haircut should ultimately look good on you. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to hop onto the undercut bandwagon, but there’s much power in knowing your face shape and which hairstyles complement it.

Continue reading for our guide to the best hairstyles for your face shape.

Square

Brad Pitt

Features

You have a strong, chiseled jawline with even proportions.

Best cuts

Similar to an oval face, a square face is a solid base for most hairstyles. A clean, classic haircut will accentuate your bone structure – try a close fade or short layers. Make sure you maintain short sides and a bit more volume up top.

Oval

ovaj-jake-gyllenhaal

Features

Your face is symmetrical and has good proportions. Your face length is greater than the width of your cheekbones, and your jawline is rounded.

Best cuts

You can rock pretty much any hairstyle (lucky you), so feel free to experiment. Just try to stay away from bangs, which could shorten your face and make it look rounder. A great place to start? A classic short cut that’s slightly longer on the top.

Round

Jack Black

Features

Your jawline and crown are rounded and your cheekbones are the widest point of your face.

Best cuts

To elongate your face, opt for a style with lots of volume on top and a short back and sides. A square style like a flat top, quiff, or pomp will add definition. Part your hair off-center to slim the face. Avoid buzz cuts or too much fringe, because they can make your face appear rounder.

If you wear a beard, trim it into a squarish shape to create the illusion of a more angular jaw.

Oblong

Adam Levine Oblong

Features

Your cheekbones, jaw, and temples are all the same width.

Best cuts

To counterbalance the length of your face, try haircuts that are longer on the sides and shorter up top, or at least styles with the same length on the sides as the top. This will help make your face appear more oval.

Avoid hairstyles with lots of volume up top, like pomps and quiffs.

We recommend bangs to shorten the length of your face.

Diamond

johnny-depp-768

Features

You have a narrow forehead and wide, angular cheekbones that taper into a pointed chin.

Best cuts

Bangs are your friend. Because your brow is thinner, adding fringe to your forehead will increase the width of that area while downplaying wide cheekbones. Slightly longer hair, cut to fall in soft layers over your face, works best.

You can also try a textured side sweep, cut to fall softly over your face to minimize hard angles.

Triangle

Ryan Gosling Triangle

Features

You have a narrow forehead and wide jawline.

Best cuts

To balance your prominent jawline, try a hairstyle with lots of volume on the top and sides. Ask your barber for a textured cut with medium length. Feel free to wear bangs if you have a triangular face – a bit of frontal fringe will offset your thinner forehead.
