Going green doesn’t have to be a chore. As you fine gents will see, oftentimes it so works out that becoming more eco-friendly is beneficial for you and your wallet too.

Demand double duty

Products that perform more than a single function mean less cost for you and less waste clogging our landfills (or floating around in that huge trash vortex in the Pacific Ocean). Take Floid’s 3-in-1 Shampoo, which can be used as a shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Using just one product instead of three will also cut your time in the shower, which means less water use.

Invest in water-soluble pomade + know how to properly remove stubborn pomade

If you’ve ever used petroleum-based pomade, you know it’s thick and holds like a boss. But it also clings to your hair like a bad ex, often requiring several rinses to get out. That’s a significant amount of water – in fact, for every minute the faucet runs, 2 gallons of water go down the drain, with an average 8-minute shower dumping 17 gallons.

So if you want to go more eco-friendly, we suggest switching to a water-based pomade, which washes out easily with water.

But if you just can’t give up your precious Murray’s (and really, who can blame you?), check out our article on how to remove pomade effectively here. Hopefully we can at least reduce your shower time.

Opt for natural brushes

Many of us carry around plastic combs – they’re small, easy to use, and inexpensive. But natural combs, such as ones made from bamboo or natural horn, one up your plastic utensils by being renewable and fully biodegradable. The residue from the manufacturing process is even used to make buttons or crushed up as natural fertilizer for farmers.

An extra benefit: horn combs reduce static, distribute natural oils for sleek shine, and encourage healthy hair growth.

Check the ingredients

While research has been inconclusive about whether certain chemicals lead to health disorders or even cancer, there have been several ingredients touted as toxic in high doses.

If you want to be extra careful, avoid chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, BHA and BHT, synthetic dyes, propylene glycol, and triclosan.

Got skin allergies? You’ll want to stay away from sodium lauryl sulfate and artificial fragrances, which can provoke skin conditions.
