When Mad Men debuted in 2007 it brought a retro revolution to our grooming regime. The slick, sharp cuts and heavily pomaded hair reminiscent of the ‘60s became mainstays of runways as well as street corners. But with the show having just come to an end and warm weather inching back, there’s a new kind of revolution going on – one with a far more casual, ‘70s vibe.

Rather than stiff, shiny styles, this season we’ve been seeing looser, messier versions of classic styles, finished with less noticeable hair products like matte clay paste.

So to make sure you look your best this summer, we’re creating a Summer Hair Guide series that keeps you on trend while still suiting up in your favorite hairstyle.

Today we’ll be covering a classic hairstyle that’s a go-to for many a fine gent – the side sweep. Appropriate for a variety of occasions because of its versatility, it’s about to get even more versatile this summer thanks to a relaxed finish. Seriously – you could wear this just as easily to a job interview as to after-work beers with the guys.

The side sweep works best for guys with straight hair that’s slightly wavy.

Here’s the lowdown from barber Carmello Guastella (abridged via GQ):

Style: Side Sweep

What should you ask your barber for?

This hairstyle is about 10-12cm on top and 2-3cm on the sides [ed’s note: this cut should not be done with clippers, so ask your barber to cut with scissors and measure in centimeters not grades]. For guys with thicker and longer hair, the hair density needs to be reduced and thinned, leaving the length.

How do you style it and what products do you need to maintain it?

For fine hair: It is important to make hair look thicker. To do this, use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, then apply a volumizing mousse to damp hair. With a brush, create the side part and sweep in the direction your hair naturally falls. For a dry look pull out the hairdryer and work your hands through your hair, keeping the side part. Apply a small dab of matte paste, using a wide styling comb for a slick look. Finish with a little hairspray.

For thicker hair: Thinning techniques are needed. It’s essential to use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner and a hydrating mousse or a light hold leave-in conditioner. Let this dry by itself or if you are about to head out, use a hairdryer – but leave the hair feeling a little damp. As with finer hair above, use a matte paste and a touch of hairspray if needed, but usually thicker hair has more strength and control.
